I have patients that travel from distant states and countries to have rhinoplasty. They have found me on the internet and they often have had a previous surgery and are being very selective about finding a revision surgeon who demonstrates a particular skill in correcting their particular problem. I also have patient come for primary rhinoplasty and they like my results and may be looking for a surgeon that avoids using the scar on the columella that is seen in open rhinoplasty. There are several considerations that I will discuss about traveling to have a cosmetic surgery, and in the spirit of Socrates and truth-seeking, I will try to cover the cons as well as the pros. I have discussed the topic already “how to pick a rhinoplasty surgeon”, and the reality is that you may not have in your immediate locale a sophisticated cosmetic nose surgeon who consistently gets results that look good to beautiful and look natural for your face and without the stigmata of surgery [ie, a scar on the columella (which often looks very good but may be noticable), and other tell-tale signs of the “operated look”. So if you have no choice….you must either not have surgery or travel. But…lets say for the sake of discussion that you have narrowed it down to choosing someone who is local and good and someone who is distant and may be better…you owe yourself a visit to the distant surgeon to at least get a comparison consult that makes you feel more comfortable in making your decision, either way. Next blog will go into depth on this subject.
